Flood

Water damage continues long after the water recedes — contaminated water and mould are the lasting risks.

Plan for evacuation plus 7 days of water and sanitation independence

Flood — atmospheric scene

What to expect

Flooding takes out water treatment, sewer systems and electricity at the same time, which makes clean water and sanitation the immediate problems — often before any property damage matters.

Boil-water advisories are common and can last weeks. Roads and bridges may be impassable, and a utility can pre-emptively cut power to flooded areas.

After the water recedes, mould, contaminated surfaces and compromised electrical systems create a second wave of risk that lasts far longer than the event itself.

Primary risks

  • Contaminated drinking water and boil-water advisories
  • Sewage backflow into basements and homes
  • Electrical hazards from submerged outlets and panels
  • Fast-moving water that can move a vehicle
  • Mould growth in wet structures
  • Displaced people and closed pharmacies or clinics

What to prepare beforehand

  1. 01Store 14 days of water if you are in a floodplain
  2. 02Know where to shut off electricity and gas — and never do it standing in water
  3. 03Move valuables, documents and medication above potential flood level
  4. 04Keep sandbags or flood barriers and a wet-dry vacuum available
  5. 05Photograph the property for insurance before anything happens
