Power Outage

The most common disruption in any region — and the one most households are least set up for.

Plan for 72 hours, 7 days where grids are stretched or storms are severe

What to expect

A local outage usually ends within hours. A regional one can run for days and takes water, heating, cooking, refrigeration and internet with it.

The real risks are quiet ones: food that thaws and then refreezes, a house that cools overnight, a phone that dies before you have written down what you needed, and improvised heating or cooking that produces carbon monoxide.

Most households need light, warmth in one room, a way to cook, a charged radio and enough battery to keep a fridge or medical equipment running.

Primary risks

  • Carbon monoxide from generators, heaters and cooking appliances used indoors
  • Food spoilage in a fridge or freezer that is opened too often
  • Loss of heat in winter, and heat stress in summer
  • Medical equipment losing power without warning
  • Phone batteries draining in the first hours
  • Candles causing fires in dark houses

What to prepare beforehand

  1. 01Buy torches and lamps per person and keep batteries with them
  2. 02Size a power station against what you actually need: fridge, router, lights, medical equipment
  3. 03Decide now where you will cook if the grid is out — outdoors only for propane or charcoal
  4. 04Keep a cooler and frozen packs for medication or food
  5. 05Write down the fridge-temperature decision point and keep a thermometer inside
