Wildfire

Smoke arrives before fire does — evacuation decisions are made hours ahead, not minutes.

Plan for immediate evacuation, with 72 hours of supplies in the vehicle

Wildfire — atmospheric scene

What to expect

Wildfire rarely arrives as a wall of flame at your door. It arrives first as smoke, then as evacuation alerts, then as roads that fill and close.

Smoke itself is a serious health risk, especially for children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with asthma or heart conditions. Air quality can deteriorate while the fire is still tens of kilometres away.

When an evacuation order comes, the practical problem is speed: pets, medication, documents and vehicles, all in minutes, on congested roads.

Primary risks

  • Smoke inhalation and worsening of existing lung or heart conditions
  • Evacuation orders arriving with limited notice
  • Road closures and traffic congestion delaying escape
  • Embers igniting structures well ahead of the fire front
  • Pets and livestock that cannot be evacuated quickly
  • Power and communications failures during the event

What to prepare beforehand

  1. 01Register for local evacuation alerts and know your evacuation zone
  2. 02Keep go-bags packed per person, including medication and pet supplies
  3. 03Plan two exit routes and one meeting point outside the area
  4. 04Photograph every room, receipts and documents for insurance
  5. 05Prepare a pet plan: carriers, leads, food and vaccination records
