Winter Storm

Cold, snow and ice — a scenario where the house and the car both become survival equipment.

Plan for 7 days, or 14 in rural areas where roads close for long periods

What to expect

Winter storms bring outages, blocked roads and dangerous cold at the same time. Power lines ice up, heating systems fail, and in rural areas the road may not be cleared for days.

Hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning are the two serious risks, and both are usually caused by improvised heating or cooking indoors. Icing and drifting make driving dangerous long after the snow stops.

Preparation is about keeping one room warm, keeping food and water moving, and not needing to drive anywhere in the first 48 hours.

Primary risks

  • Hypothermia in an unheated home, especially overnight
  • Carbon monoxide from heaters, generators or stoves used indoors
  • Falls on ice and injuries while clearing snow
  • Being stranded in a vehicle on a closed road
  • Frozen and burst water pipes
  • Prescription medication running out while roads are closed

What to prepare beforehand

  1. 01Identify one room you can close off and heat, and seal it against draughts
  2. 02Buy an indoor-rated heater and store propane cylinders outside only
  3. 03Fit carbon monoxide alarms on every level and test them monthly
  4. 04Keep sleeping bags or reflective blankets per person
  5. 05Let taps drip during a deep freeze and know where your water shut-off is
