First Aid

First Aid

A stocked kit, extra medication and a plan for when help is delayed

During a regional event, emergency services are stretched and roads may be closed. A well-organised kit plus a supply of regular medication keeps small problems small.

Household kits should cover cuts, burns, sprains, fever and stomach upset — the injuries and illnesses that actually occur during outages, when meals are cooked on unfamiliar stoves and people move through dark houses.

Beyond the kit

  • Ask for an extra supply of regular prescriptions.
  • Keep a written medication list with dosages in the kit.
  • Learn basic first aid and CPR — the kit matters far less than the person using it.

A first aid kit treats minor injuries. Know the warning signs that mean emergency care — chest pain, breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, or a head injury with confusion. Check expiry dates annually.
