Food

Shelf-stable food you actually eat, plus a way to cook it

Emergency food should be food your household already likes, plus a small reserve of meals that need no cooking at all. The mistake is buying a pallet of unfamiliar freeze-dried meals and eating none of it.

Aim for three meals per person per day, built from tins, dry staples, nut butters and instant meals — then add a cooking method that does not depend on the grid. In a detached house that is usually a two-burner propane stove used outdoors. In an apartment, it has to be a butane burner or a battery-powered induction plate used in a ventilated kitchen.

Keep it simple

  • Rotate from your normal pantry and replace what you use.
  • Keep a manual can opener where you can find it in the dark.
  • Store food off the floor and away from fuel and chemicals.

Never use a barbecue, charcoal grill or camping stove indoors, in a garage or in an attached shed. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless and lethal. Check stored food for allergens and rotate anything approaching its date.
